Crazy Sexy WHAT?

My mom always said I liked to stir the pot with a glittering spoon and wow was she right! Ever since the TLC ad started running I've been getting oceans of letters of thanks, praise, big love and who the hell do you think you are!? Huh? I wasn't ready for that. Once I saw the TLC commercial I got it. I love TLC, but quite simply the commercial does not represent the film. If you want know what all this crazy sexy chat is about, read our site and watch our trailer. Some of ya'll think it's a reality show! NO. But if it was, how do I get voted off the Isand?

The title was meant to kick cancer in it's place, NOT to glorify it. Tragically, cancer is sometimes a part of life and too many people give it more power than the nasty thing deserves. Cancer is a BIG part of my life, it is a chronic disease that I may have to live with forever. Cancer ISN'T sexy, the soulful women who have it ARE. We are warriors, angels, vibrant hot tomatoes and cancer can not take that away from us. Cancer cowgirls are empowered, whole, thrivers with or without the disease. I refuse to let cancer break my spirit, victimize me, or make me feel like a sick person - so I CHOOSE to believe that I am more alive, beautiful and yes, sexier (AKA empowered, passionate and intriguing) than ever before! Why not?

A little back story for you, Crazy Sexy Cancer was originally the subject heading for the mass email updates I would write to my friends and family. I wanted them to know that just because something really scary and dark had changed my life, I hadn’t changed. I still had my sense of humor, I was still willing to poke fun at things (especially stigmas), to challenge perceptions and flip the script. I wasn’t going to amputate parts of myself to fit into the new (and tiny) cancer box.

I don't look at my journey as if it is a battle (partly because I hope I don't lose) so instead I call it my cancer adventure story. It is a documentary film about how I coped with cancer. Since there is no cure and no treatment for my disease I live with it everyday. By calling it crazy sexy cancer I demystify it and redefine it for myself. It makes me feel a little lighter and a lot stronger- NOT shackled and shelved like damaged goods.

Cancer is still something people whisper about and feel shamed by. I understand feeling angry and powerless in the wake of this disease all too well. But aren't we all so tired of swallowing the pain, suffering and words we dare not say? Who doesn't feel like roaring? Crazy SEXY cancer makes me feel liberated. I hope it does for you too. Sexy doesn't come from a black dress, perfect size 6, great boobs etc. Sexy women are confident and powerful gals who speak their truth. Sexy isn't sinful and nasty, it's electric and loving. What do you beautiful (oops, is that a bad word too....he he he) divine gals think?

PS. If you are into this message and it means something to you, go to the TLC forum and speak your truth!

Peace and love and so much glitter!
Kris

PSS. Thanks Especially Heather for the title of this blog. I love you and you look goreous sporting the bald is beautiful look! Rock on sista!

Thank you for everyting from writing the book to doing the movie your way.

All of us sexy cancer victims need to get together for a Incentive Program. My company runs these for all types of companies where we go somewhere exotic, get speakers that have relevance to the company and have a lot of FUN.

Let's do it, let's plan a Crazy, Sexy Cancer Annual Incentive Trip for 2008.

Let me know if you are in, I start treatment next week but my company is large enough that if we want to do it, I will direct from my doctor's office and home.

THANKS for everything,

I thought the same thing when I saw the commercial - it's cute, but the trailer is a much better representation of your message. It's so moving and inspirational. People need to wait and see the movie - and then hopefully have the grace take back any negativity they've thrown your way. Good luck - my DVR is set!!

I just discovered your blog, book, and documentary and I think it's amazing. From one survivor to another, I want to celebrate you for embodying (and documenting) the project of self-definition. We have cancer, but we aren't cancer.

Your work is positive, energetic, honest, and real. You're following in the footsteps of feminist activists/survivors like Audre Lorde and Susan Sontag who resisisted the cultural silence associated with cancer by refusing complete identification with illness. Sontag says illness is a country we'll all visit someday, it's just that some of us got there sooner than others. In that sense, not only are we survivors, but we're also pioneers.

Well said Kris! I have yet to see the commercial, although my DVR is set. I still can't believe though that there are people who thought you were calling cancer sexy! It's too bad TLC couldn't have made sure the commercial was a better representation of your message, but that's what happens when you boil things down.

I agree with vdub, let's hope these people tune in and then remember to shower you with the good emails that you deserve!

Hi - I just emailed my friend Tina about your film. She is in the middle of her chemo, prepping for her double masectomy. She has inflammatory breast cancer, stage four. She is a Crazy, sexy and bald and always beautiful. I hope this film helps her go through this. She is young and a mother of three.

It is so distressing to me that so many young women are getting cancer, so many young people in general! More then just cures, we need to find the cause. Something funky is happening...

Anyway, I hope I can catch your film (I live in Italy) and best of health to you!
Ciao, Sara

I just have to say that I love everything you, your book, and your documentary represent. I'm a cancer survivor of almost 11 years (had Hodgkin's lymphoma at 13 years old). Your outlook is truly an inspiration.. I definitely intend on ordering your book for some more of your wisdom!

I watched the trailer for your documentary, and was soooo moved.. I can't wait for it to air.

I remember when I was 13 thinking, "I may have cancer.. but it certainly will NOT have me." :)

Thanks for everything!

I have to admit that I giggled a little when I read the title :)

Thank you for explaining the meaning behind using the word sexy... I have to admit that I too scratched my head a bit when I got to the sexy part, but when you explained it on my blog, it made perfect sense. You are right, we are not defined by cancer, It cant take "me" away...

Thank you for your kind words regarding my very bald head! I think I look mighty dang sexy if I do say so myself! My husband prefers me with no hair, which makes me wonder why I spent so much money on it in the first place :)

Amen...this is my philosophy exactly! I cringe at the sound of the words "fight" or "war" against cancer...such negative words when what we cancer surviors need are positive words. I am not in a fight I am on an adventure. An adventure that I did not voluntarily joined up for, but one that I was forced to participate in. Thank you Kris for showing everyone that cancer isn't all doom and gloom...peace out! Izzy : )

I knew as soon as I saw the black knit hat yelling "fuck you cancer".. this was the blog I should be reading. I have a pink golf hat that says the same thing but in Japanese because my friends thought I would not wear it if it was in English... I was diagnosed last year with vulvar cancer. After surgery, chemo and radiation which ended in Feb (on valentines day) I have spent hours reading blogs and articles looking for something that I could relate to, that felt like it was mine with no luck. I saw the ad for the show and came to the web site.. thank you so much for sharing this honest look into your life.. I am encouraging all my loved ones to watch because for some reason I think you will answer questions they are afraid to ask or do not even know they have..

Peace and health..

Kris: Thank you for getting out there and telling our story. I have a rare leukemia and was given a year to live (10 years ago!!!) I went through some tough times but made it and cancer became my personal trainer-makeover! I started being present and changed life. One of the biggest changes was turning my career around to help our comrades. I am a doctor who was trained in ER to save lives but then was forever changed by my awful experiences. I have started the first palliative care program for Los Angeles county hospital and care for young men and women with cancer. The experience of cancer left me blank for a while and then lots of dog love and long beach walks (live in Venice) turned it around. I learned who I was and what was important. When I watched the trailer I sat and cried. Where have you been all my cancer life?! I love your outlook and strength. My students would learn a great deal from you and if you ever want to come show them what a true cancer diva is or actually rock star I would be honored! It is so important to teach them early.
Well I have gone on enough-I love your spirit and hope to meet you in some venue.

And you're right. It will be one year since I was diagnosed in Sept. and it has been the most incredible year ever. Hi!
I came across your amazing website by pure accident. I've just turned 21 this month and I have been living with cancer since January this year. I was first diagnosed with melanoma in my right shoulder. the tumor was 4.5mm deep. Fortunatly a sentinal lymph node biopsy revealed that it hadn't spread to my lymph nodes. I took part in a clinical trail of PegIntron to reduce the risk of recurrence. The cancer came back, but only locally. I have also recently learnt that a mole on my lower back is melanoma aswell. I am due to start a course of radiotherapy on September 3rd.
I just want to say that it is absolutely empowering to know that you have such a strength. Its contagious! I am definitely going to go out and buy your book.
Thank you so so much! xx

Just saw you on the Today Show and wanted to say a big THANK YOU for being an inspiration to all of us. Like you, I also think that cancer was the best thing that ever happened to me because it made me see who I really was and who I wanted to be. I saw a part of me that I never knew existed before.
As you know, sometimes, living with cancer can be a very lonely journey, so thank you for being so courageous and outrageous! We need more people like you to share the good and not so good stories and keep us inspired.
Can't wait to watch the documentary on TLC this week.
Keep on the great work!!!

I just got your book in the mail today. How did you get inside my head? My friends and family don't understand my sense of humor, so I was pleased and amazed to see that there are other people who "play the cancer card." I've never actually done it, but I like to tell people I'm going to. The fun for me is imagining the look on someone's face if I would say, "Eh, not today. I have cancer." Thanks for finally making the Cancer Club a place worth being! Can't wait to see the documentary!

Kris,

I can't say that I know what you are going through, but you still give me so much strength and desire to take a better care of myself. I've been getting pretty sick for the past couple of years. I've been having colds about every two months. I know that my immune system is weak and that I need to stop stressing and take a better care of myself, which is sometimes hard to understand why until you are hit by something really bad and you end up fighting for yourself.

Bless you and thank you for You.

Gurl~ fantabulous blog! And, as for the title, it rocks. I 'got it' and I think many do 'get it.' I think when something is seen out of the norm (not a fan of that word :O) or standard, some ppl view it from a tunnel. Just my humble opinion.

I like to view it as a bridge, that is taking me on a ride to a much more positive and beautiful place since diagnosis.

Oh, and BTW this ride better be crazy because "gurls do just wanna have fun!"

Unfortunately it doesn't surprise me that people want to make a stink out of the title. Just another example of judging a book by its cover and all those other cliche's. Anyway, I am always been and always will be Sexy. I am so grateful to you for this blog, the book which is the bomb (oops can I say that!) and the film. I've been telling my posse about it. Please let me know about the canceration/retreat, I'll be spending my disability funds on that for sure. Peace, love, and wbc's ;)

Kris,

My name is Ryan Armbrust. I was diagnosed with Stage III Hodgkin's back in December of 2006 and am currently undergoing chemo. I took time off from my day job to get through this whole "Cancer" thing. In my spare time, I created an online T-Shirt and Swag shop called http://www.chucklenutshirts.com.

I have a section that is nothing but off color cancer humor shirts. http://www.cafepress.com/chucklenut/2619770
They are selling really well, but any exposure I can get would help. Can you please add them to your great website?
I was sick and tired of looking for "Cancer" t shirts and only finding "Feel Good" stuff. My shirts are for the young hipster cancer set. Please give them a look.

Thanks for your consideration,
Ryan Armbrust

P.S.
Loved your spot on the Today Show. Can't wait to see your film.

Kris,

The way you have taken "cancer", a word that many can not say aloud without a feeling of discomfort, and gave it a "face lift" is beyond amazing!

I am a cancer survivor; as well as having 2 family members currently battling cancer, and 1 who just recently lost her battle.

The inspiration that over came me just during the 7 minute trailer for your upcoming documentary filled my heart with hope beyond.

My family members don't feel Crazy or Sexy about their cancer, but I pray that after watching your story, they will realize how lucky and blessed we all are no matter what we are faced with in life.

I am a Registered Nurse at a cancer treatment hospital, and I help cancer patients and their families everyday. Many of them come back for subsequent treatments and they, and their families, become part of my family.

I can not wait to watch your story, and I plan on purchasing a few copies of your books to give to my family members, and some of our patients. I am glad that the hospital where I work has a wonderful mind and body department to help care for the person, not just the "disease". If anyone can bring out the Sexy, it will be them.

As for me, I will spread the Crazy Sexy Cancer Way to all those around me!

If you are ever in the Chicago/Milwaukee area on a tour, I would be honored to meet you, or somehow bring some patients and nurses to experience crazy, sexy inspiration, or if there is anything that I can help you with on your journey, I am there.

Thank you for allowing us into your life and sharing your soul.

On Monday morning I saw you on the Today show and I look forward to viewing your documentary on TLC on Wed. I visited your page and was excited to hear that we share alot of the same attitude. I have always had a "Bring it On" attitude and I truly believe it has had a positive impact on how my treatments are coming along. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

On a personal note, I met Ms. Carr at BookExpo in June. I was coming off of a time when a project I was passionate about was not being understood by bookstore buyers, and I was feeling a bit down and sorry for my team. I was walking off the show floor through the Globe Pequot booth when I saw CSCT staring up at me. I laughed, first, then said, whoa, what is this? As soon as I picked up the book, an editor from Skirt! Books came over to talk with me. My first question to her was how the book was received by bookstore accounts. After all, the project I was working on was seen as controversial, but a book that could be seen as making light of a serious subject like cancer was another thing altogether. The Skirt! editor told me there were a small handful of accounts that were not thrilled with it, but almost all were giving it a strong chance, based on the profile of the author and her documentary that was coming out this fall. Instantly, my own “troubles” seemed insignificant, and I felt in good company, trying to do something that was a little off the beaten path. Something that would put a smile on a lot of faces and give them hope at a time they needed it most.

The editor then said that the author was in the booth, and did I want to meet her? I went over with my galley and asked her to autograph it. I wanted to give it to one of my dearest friends who is fighting her own battle against cancer. I chatted a little with Kris and then asked if she would sign it for my friend. “Is she a survivor?” she asked. “In every sense of the word,” I replied without hestitation. She wrote something very cool and personal in there, and I could tell she meant every word of it.

When it came to giving the book to my friend, I hestitated. You see, her fight isn’t always sunshine and roses. And there are days when she probably would like to be someone without cancer. My husband said it could be seen as thoughtless. And the last thing in the world I would want to do is hurt this particular person. But I had an autographed, personalized galley - what else could I do with it? In the end, I gave it to her and she was just thrilled. Thrilled to see someone out there with such a positive and motivating attitude. Thrilled to have someting signed by an author. After all, this was an author who said “Cancer needed a makeover and I was just the gal to do it!” You could just as easily apply those words to my friend. On a side note, I took a galley of my own and read the book, and found it to be all that and a big fat mojito.

So, you have a book that several accounts did not get, but was most worthy of taking a chance on. I applaud Skirt! books for bringing Kris’s voice to print and hope that others can take what she has written and find their own inspiration and joy from it. And that we can all keep in perspective what our challenges are and find a way to grow from them. Go forth and spread the love, babe!

Hello to Kris and everyone on here for such amazing inspiration and love.

I am a 'complementary' cancer coach. That means that while I support my client's decision to choose chemo, surgery and radiation, they hear both the upside and the downside of this choice. I particularly encourage them to do what they can to RELY ON THEMSELVES through a modified lifestlye that includes laughter, good nutrition, mediation and well, you get the picture. I coach them to this end to empower them to remission.

Having read your comments, I can only say that I will be adding this blog to my website at www.cancercoach.ca for everyone to hear about and to read. It is invaluable to everyone that is on here and to those who are yet to come.
Thank you so much for sharing all of your experiences. Your comments and stories will improve the health of many women (and men).

I am really sorry for me that I didn't get to see your doc.My sister called me and said I should watch it but I'm on my 3rd day back to work since my last surgery. I am on my third style of cancer and am scared as hell. I'm 41 and have really had enough. I don't know who to beleive any more. My sister seems to think we share the same type of cancer, but I can't seem to find a description of yours in anything I've read. I have gathered from all the reading that I've done on your site, that you are not a quitter, well neither am I. Shit happens and so does cancer. oh well. Keep living the life and conquering the enemies.

My name is Laura, I live between Houston and Galveston Texas. I have synovial sarcoma. Very rare, and the doctors have been 'all about' telling me that I was dying, that I wouldn't be here in six months to a year, and so forth. I'm two years out from my second bout with it (five years out from my first occurrence), 30+ tumors in my lungs now shrunk to 2-4. Mental, emotional, spiritual, diet and habit changes (and my little daughter's way of giving me strength) are why I'm still here. Thank you thank you thank you for this film. I missed the first half and I am desperate to see the whole thing. Thank you for sharing yourself. I do it with a ton of blogs, and I know it takes a certain 'something' to open yourself up to your core for people who you will never know or meet. You hear that you are an inspiration all the time, and you are, but you are more than this. You are more than your prognosis. You are more than your body. I appreciate that there are other beautiful, full of life, women who have the same fears that I have. I have been told that I am at very high risk for getting melanoma (cancer). This is the leading cause of cancer death in girls below 30 years old. I am just 30. I have known this risk for years, but now I had FOUR abnormal test results, so I am finally taking it seriously! They think that UV rays and genetics cause it, but they are not even sure. I am avoiding the sun, but my risk factors just keep increasing. I would love to have a on-line group to help prevent all the types of cancer! We could share our tips on the best doctors in different cities for each form of cancer. We could share nutrition tips that seem to help, chemicals to avoid, etc. I am not sure how to start one though to be honest, so I will probably follow the lead of you all!

My cousin is diagnosed with Mesothelioma. Currently she is coming home from the hospital after being treated for pain with Methadone, Morphine, Narcan, and Dilaudid -- at various times. The family would like to seek an accupunturist that could make home visits in the Los Angeles area. If anyone can please help us find someone reputable that would be wonderful. She is coming home under Hospice care but we are hopeful that we can help control the pain using homeopathy methods rather than only relying entirely on toxic medications (morphine). She won't be able to start chemotherapy until she can gain her strength back.
