Inspirational Messages from Cyber Space

Hi beloveds,

Well, this is gonna be a quickie because I want to throw my computer through a window this morning! For the past 2 hours I have been writing a blog on mood food to finish off our depression posts. My hungry computer ate it. Rrrrr! Oh well, I swore like a bar wench and then giggled. A loud voice said "whatever you do Kris, don't get stressed and depressed! Kinda goes against everything you've been saying". Soooo, I will create it again in the near future but for now I have to get back to writing my book (due SUNDAY!).

Recently I signed up on tut.com for daily spiritual jumper cable emails. I love it! Many of you have awesome suggestions and resources for affirmations and internet hugs. Let's share! Please post as many good vibe hubs as possible and please surf around and see what works for you. Post here even if you've posted elsewhere.

We could all use some holy roller, Jesus, Buddha, Elvis etc during the holiday season. Right? A gentle reminder that we are more than enough and that we are healing.

Endless love and whirled peas,
K

Thanks so much Kris..I have found that many Raw groups are found at meetup.com.
Kris I also wanted to know which clinic you found to be most inspiring in your quest for knowledge.
Living foods, Hypocrates, or Dr. Allen's in San Deigo. I need some rebooting and i think if I attend a clinic that will help.
Thanks 4 everything canSer cowgirl..

Welcome back, Kris.
Maybe the computer just got tired of talking about depression and low moods and decided o act on its own.
I remember the words that you said in a TV show that caused me to give my life a turn around: This cancer is not killing me, but it is giving me a new life. This is the only truth I live by now. THANKS SOOOOO MUUUUCH.
Remember not to get too stressed with book-deadlines: it wouldn't be worth it.
Love,
Maria.

Hi Kris
robin reminded me.. I can only go to one clinic for one week.. they are all so expensive and some are far away. What would you do if you were an Los Angeles gal who needed a week away and had a low budget?
The OHI seems less expensive than most and is near San diego, so no air fare.

Your thoughts are appreciated!

And, of course, like Debbie wrote, this blog always helps when I am feeling frustrated! :)

Good luck Kris!! You're on the home stretch! Almost done! You can do it! Ha ha you're much better at motivating people :)
Aaaah! I'm rewriting a paper for grad school! I'm so frustrated because I couldve been done with my first semester of grad school if I had only done a better job the first time around with my paper. Maybe it's my problem with run-ons. Yeah?
I have to finish my paper today or atleast tomorrow! I know it pales in comparison to writing a book, but I feel your pain :)

Hello Kris,

Thought you might want to know this story.

CIGNA Capitulates to Patient Revolt
Thursday December 20, 6:24 pm ET

Following Massive Protest, Insurer Authorizes Transplant for 17-year-old Nataline Sarkisyan
CNA/NNOC-Sponsored Protest Sparks Flood of Calls from Across U.S.

GLENDALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In a stunning turn around, insurance giant CIGNA has capitulated to community demands, and protests that the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee helped to generate, and agreed to a critically needed liver transplant for Nataline Sarkisyan, a 17-year-old girl in the intensive care unit at UCLA Medical Center, says CNA.

A national web of friends and family of Nataline, CNA/NNOC registered nurses, doctors, members of the Armenian community, healthcare advocates, and netroots supporters pitched in on an unprecedented national day of action on Nataline’s behalf.

The centerpiece of the protests was an impassioned rally today sponsored by CNA/NNOC with the substantial help of the local Armenian community that drew 150 people to the Glendale offices of CIGNA. Hundreds of phone callers clogged the lines of CIGNA offices around the country, all demanding that CIGNA reverse its prior denial of care.

“This is an incredible turnaround generated by a massive outpouring around the country that proves that an enraged public can make a difference and achieve results,” said CNA/NNOC Executive Director Rose Ann DeMoro. “CIGNA had to back down in the face of a mobilized network of patient advocates and healthcare activists who would not take no for an answer.”

The netroot protest was organized by Eve Gittelson, an influential health policy blogger who writes on Daily Kos as nyceve, and many of the calls were also the product of work by the Armenian National Committee.

“Nataline is now seriously ill and still has significant hurdles in her fight for her life, but thankfully our combined voices and protests have finally given her and her family hope,” said Geri Jenkins, RN, a member of the CNA/NNOC Council of Presidents who works in a transplant unit at the University of California San Diego Medical Center.

“However, it is deplorable and appalling that CIGNA needed to have hundreds of people pounding on their doors and besieging them with calls to take the humanitarian step they should have done long before today,” said Jenkins, who spoke at the Glendale rally.

Nataline’s mother, Hilda Sarkisyan, expressed her profound thanks to CNA/NNOC. “We couldn’t have done this without you helping us to stand up against this insurance company and forcing them to finally do the right thing. It is not right in this country for it to take a rally, a protest, and a major press conference to get an insurance company to listen.”

“Every politician who thinks the answer to our healthcare crisis is more insurance should stop and think about Nataline Sarkisyan,” said DeMoro. “Insurance is not care. Paying for insurance coverage is not the same as assuring you will receive appropriate care, even when recommended by a physician as it was for Nataline. Insurance corporations profit by denying care to the sick, and that is no way to run a humane healthcare system.”

DeMoro said that CNA/NNOC will continue to encourage patient protests and publicize stories about insurance companies’ denial of care, as it has all year through its www.guaranteedhealthcare.org website, while pressing for real healthcare reform “that takes medical decisions out of the hands of insurers and places them where they belong, in the hands of healthcare professionals and their families.”

Background on case:

“My daughter survived two bouts of cancer, and against all odds has been stable even with so many of her organs not working, only to be told that she cannot get the only treatment that will save her life because some administrator in some office thinks it is too expensive,” said Hilda Sarkisyan. “We needed help in standing up against this insurance provider, and of course it was the nurses who stepped forward.”

In a Dec. 11 letter to CIGNA’s transplant department, four UCLA physicians said that Nataline “currently meets criteria to be listed as Status 1A” for a transplant and urged the company to “urgently re-review her case” and their denial. CIGNA said it denied the care because their benefit plan “does not cover experimental, investigational and unproven services,” to which the doctors replied, “Nataline’s case is in fact none of the above.”

On Dec. 14, Hilda Sarkisyan was told by the hospital that a healthy liver was available, but because CIGNA had refused authorization, the family would have had to make an immediate down payment of $75,000 to proceed, an amount the family could not afford.

CNA/NNOC is the nation’s largest and fastest-growing union of direct-care RNs, with some 75,000 members in all 50 states.

Hi All-

I was sitting in a waiting room at the Moffitt Center about a month ago and saw the following quote by Dr. Seuss in a newsletter: "I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!”

I just loved that quote and read it over and over. When I got home I typed it up and hung it on my bulletin board that sits behind my computer. I think of diet and nutrition as my "bat" and I'm doing my best to make trouble for my troubles!

Sending you all the very best wishes over the holidays and peace, health and happiness in the new year.

Hey Jackie -- I just read on CNN.COm that the poor girl that the community fought Cigna for died a few hours after the insurance company reversed their decision.....her parents are now filing murder charges against the insurance company. This is why we need universal health care, people!!!! That company SHOULD be charged with murder! And convicted!

Holistic Jen, you are too lovely, my friend. I was delighted to read your response. Today, I went to the hideously crowded mall to return the Christmas gifts my mom had bought for my dad. I started feeling hot, faint, and utterly miserable and like a beacon, a Vitamin Shoppe appeared. I got me some Royal Jelly, (I hope the capsules are okay) 5HTP, Flax seed oil (again capsules- I wanted to take everything immediately) and liquid Hawthorn extract. I went to the food court, grabbed a bottle of water and dove in. Told ya you didn't type in vain! I think it's too soon to report, but even if it was a placebo effect, I quickly started feeling better. If you have any specs on dosage, please share. For now, I'm following the directions on the bottles. Also, does anyone have an aromatherapy recommendation that works well for grief, sadness, longing, and general pity-partying woe-is me-ness? Maybe the "Courage" one from the CSC Good Stuff section would be a good choice, but if anyone knows of something for my specific ish, I'd love to know about it.
Terri, what does one do with the bio-mat? Do you lie on it in the middle of the day (if so, for how long?)or slap it on top of your mattress and sleep on it each night? And how heavy are they? No need for exact weight, but I'm traveling nonstop and curious about the schlep in and out of hotels. Thinking about the single one. She pricey though! Maybe just the pillow for now.
Debbie, you sound like you're doing great, girl. Keep that positivity flowing to your every cell.
Kris, I am sending you so much writerly love as I am sure you are typing your little tail off. Know that your draft is certainly far better than you think, so no perfectionistic artistic thrashing allowed! You are a blessed vessel, dear one. Have faith. Love you so. Love all of you so.
xoxoxo,
Sandra

Sandra-

Gosh you are strong. I watched your clip of your Oprah appearance. You have an amazing life!

I'm feeling like crap today. I've had 3 months of pain free bliss, but all of a sudden, the last three days, the pain is back. I'm trying not to get too discouraged, but I have 2 Christmas parties to go to in the next 2 days, and my stomache blows up like a frickin blow-fish when I'm in pain like this, and I probably won't be able to fit into my clothes. So do I just wear sweatpants, or stay home and curl up in a ball? I have to admit I was looking forward to showing off my slightly slimmer body, since I started juicing and eating better, but my frickin endo is ruining any chance of that.

Cowgirls and Cowboy(s),
It's been a long while since I've checked in; I've been at Hopkins again for 3 weeks - finally came home yesterday. It is comforting to catch-up and see many familiar names, and new ones! Welcome. Sandra dear, how sad I am to read that your father passed away. I can only imagine how you must feel losing your dad - and so suddenly; so abruptly. My words cannot ever erase or minimize your grief - I know from what I'm reading on Kris's blog that there is a whole village behind you right now, and that you are taking one day at a time. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Kris - so happy to read that you're at the final stretch of the new book - literally! Today IS Sunday, right?!?!? And many thanks for inspiring me to go raw - although I continue to have my cancer ups and downs, my Hopkins docs truly believe I am STILL alive, not in spite of, but because of giving up ALL animal products (no animal flesh or byproducts ie: dairy) and gluten. It would have never happened had not I received your book from a close friend during my last hospitalization! It's been 8 weeks of "raw and grain" and even while receiving treatment this last go-around, when my appetite came back, I had the nutritionist at Hopkins on her toes putting together special meals for me - greeny, grainy and raw - flaxseed sprinkles and all! When I left yesterday, workers from the commissary came upstairs to finally see "who was making all of the food trouble"!!!!

happy and merry to all you crazy sexy amazing creatures;)
sandra quick answer to the bio mat question is you lay on it and anytime anywhere-i sleep on mine every night. if you travel a lot i would think about getting a mini mat instead of the pillow-it is only 8.5 pounds and you can buy an adapter at radio shack and plug it into the lighter in your car. for me the heat is so soothing and the daily practice of carving out an hour to mediate and intending on the mat is non negotiable in my life but the really important part is the detox of blood and creating an alkaline system and staying HEALTHY but i fear i am turning into an info-mercial so check out my website www.heallthybodyhealthylives.com and read my story and all the info is there and an email. it is the best gift you could give yourself and even raises the serotonin level in your brain :)
debbie thanks for the gratitude reminder...

Hi Everyone,

I blog about overcoming my depression on www.100daysinbed.blogspot.com. I wrote a post about GOOD MOOD FOODS.

Because Kris has given me so much with her blog, I thought I'd post what I researched as a way to tide us all over. It's not vegan, it's not green, so take what you want from it, leave the rest!

It starts here:

I'm kind of shocked how big a role food plays in being bummed out. I know a lot of us want to be empowered and feel like WE CAN DO SOMETHING when we feel depressed.

AND AWAY WE GO:

•Eat a serving of high-quality protein three times a day. Higher quality protein is better absorbed and more efficiently utilized, so you will need to eat less of it. Adequate protein promotes good moods. Good examples of high-quality protein foods are seafood, poultry, lean red meat, soy, lowfat yogurt, rice with beans, rice with lentils.

•Eat cold-water fish three times a week. This is one of the best sources of omega-3, an essential fatty acid crucial to optimal brain function. Omega-3s are found in salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines and cod. (I use a fish oil supplement when I don't think I will have three serving a week).

•Eat two eggs a week, or sprinkle lecithin granules on your cereal, salads or vegetables. These are the best sources of phospholipids, which help you metabolize fat and enhance your mood and mental performance. (Okay, I admit, I don't know what Lecithin is - but I love eggs. Hardboiled sliced on whole wheat pita toast, egg whites with spinach and a lil' Laughing Cow Cheese is to die for.)

•(COMPLEX) CARBS JUST WANT TO BE LOVED - Eat one serving of low Glycemic Index (low-GI) complex carbohydrates at every meal. Complex carbohydrates are long chains of sugar molecules strung together that are digested slowly and help prevent fluctuations in blood sugar levels that can cause depression as well as cravings for sugar and alcohol. Complex carbohydrates also help raise serotonin levels, which calm you down and lift your mood. Good examples of low-GI foods are whole grains, bran, beans, apples, cherries, dried apricots, plums and pears.

•Eat one or two servings of antioxidant fruits and vegetables with every meal. These replenish the body and brain with oxygen, giving you energy and combating illness. Antioxidant-rich foods include prunes, berries, kale, spinach, broccoli, and alfalfa sprouts. (You guys, I can't tell you how in love I am with this awesome morning shake - frozen berries, spinach (you will not even taste it), yogurt, flaxseed & whatever protein & vitamin base powder you like from your health food store - you'll be full for hours.)

•Have a heaping tablespoon of ground seeds a day. These provide you with the needed energy and essential fat to keep your body and brain churning out maximum energy. In a blender or coffee grinder, grind half flaxseeds and half sesame, sunflower, hemp and pumpkin seeds. Keep in a sealed glass jar in refrigerator, and add to your salads, sprinkle over vegetables or cereal, or have in a shake. (I love flaxseeds, so easy to sprinkle on cereal, in steel cut oatmeal or even salads.)

•VITAMIN B IS YOUR FRIEND - "The first clinical effects of insufficient vitamin B complex are mood changes, insomnia, changes in appetite, sugar craving and impaired drug metabolism. As a group, the B vitamins plays an important role both in alleviating depression and in relieving the anxiety and restlessness which often accompanies it." So make sure you have lots of Vitamin Bs in your multi-vitamin.

Hi Sandra!

Sorry to have been offline and a delay in responding to you. I hope you are still feeling improved.

What a great thrill to read about how a Vitamin Shoppe 'appeared.' Loved that. The fact that you had the list of what to get with you was the stunning part...My guess is that the Royal Jelly and flax may have been what helped. But I have also found immediate relief from Hawthorne syrup myself. Good for you!!! I love that you took action in an non-toxic way to get in the power/driver seat over your body. Placebo? Wonderful! Better than a 'No-cebo' I say (which is what a lot of medical professionals offer up, and some 'well-meaning' others at times, don't they?). You will know if it is more than that soon enough. 5 HTP is usually used as a relaxant, and mostly at night. Yes, capsules are GREAT! And stick with the dosages given, I would say. I recommend keeping the flax caps in the fridge when you can-but they don't HAVE to be, it is just best for all oils (including olive oil, and the coconut oil-yes, I know they get hard and it is more difficult to use them-and please do not ever microwave them-this kills their healing properties).

The best book to own to be able to look up this stuff on your own (not that I EVER mind posting to help, of course!) is Healthy Healing by Linda Page. It is an A-Z resource book that I highly recommend to anyone wanting to use safe, natural approaches to healing. I use mine constantly!
(It has instructions for enemas, healing eating programs, green recipes, herbal remedy instructions, info on how to make infusions, how to treat childhood illnesses, etc. etc.) You can get it through Amazon, or www.healthyhealing.com.

I looked up aromatherapy for you in my copy. There is not one specifically listed for grief in my older edition. Bummer there. However, there are several mentioned for depression, but there are many different emotions listed in that category there as well. I read your description, and I keep coming back to the Bach flower remedy for you-Rescue Remedy. Take a look at the website, and after reading the description for that remedy, see if it resonates with you. If not, let me know. I am still looking and researching for you, and will post again, k? If necessary for you, I may end up just typing in the different descriptions given, so you can better choose for yourself. So much of it is intuitive, and often times the scent you are drawn to is the one most appropriate. Don't be afraid to 'sniff shop' in the store-that's what the testers are there for! :) I read that bergamont is good for lifting melancholy and depression, and jasmine is useful for anxiety, emotional imblances, figidity, impotence, is antidepressant, antiseptic and sedative.

In the interim, if you have lavender oil on hand, that is good for so many things, including: depression, calming the nerves and emotions, alleviating stress and tension, calming the heart, and it even says it alleviates painful menstrual periods (all from my book). And of course, it has a relaxing effect and can induce sleep. Hope that helps.

How are you feeling?
Sending virtual hugs,
Jen

Hi Ya'll a girly question.. Oh first the super stupendious magnificent new ever on earth.. I went for my check up and I have two scans left liver and chest xray but for the first time in 5 years first time.. no cancer cells.. so far not one.. Now I will not count my cells before they hatch bone cancer usally spread if it going to to the liver or lungs.. but.... so far so clear.. hahahhaha
My doctor was shocked at all the differences.. NO allergies. No headaches.. NO fatty callie.. 42 pounds down.. NO panic attacks.. No bitching.. hahaha.. well I am thrilled. I cannot belive all you guys have done for me. Have the last of the scans next week.. So I am anxious to ge them over with.. but good news.. He gave me this long speech about not to get head up.. well I am head up.. life happens and with bone cancer you always have a little here and there.. but for today.. I am clear.. BTW he is tickled over his copy of csc and the book and he is thrilled that the chemo effects have not almost vanished. he is ready to put all his cancer chicks on this plan. I gave him natalia roses book too. SO he can keep current. Ha we got him now 8 months ago he said I would weaken my immune system and kill my fool self. I told him now when I was in the hospital I would be juicing and ordering specail meals and he laughed and said that would be great with him..Hurrah...

Now question Jen. I know we should not tan.. but I love the sun and only use lavender oil and sunscreen to lay out with.. I was wondering though.. does anyone have a tip for breast fibriods or breast pain when your hormones flip out. I was pput into menapause after so much chemo but now i am getting far to healthy..didn't want those little visits back.. but it is a sign of health. so ... so be it. we are on caffiene free and dairy free so I thought that would help.
